This advanced lesson series is for Club Locarno Members who are part of the Sailing Fleet. The Waszp is a foiling skiff, which is a challenging boat to learn to sail. This lesson series will teach the basic skills necessary to get checked out into the Waszp buddy system (the ability to take the boat out for a solo sail requires a separate checkout after you have had some time on the water to further develop your skills).

    Required sailing skill pre-requisites:

    • Comfortable rigging and sailing a Laser (a Laser will be used on Day 2 of the lesson).
    • Experience using sail controls to quickly change your sail shape in light, medium, and heavy breeze
    • Good/Fast double handed sheeting

    • Confidence in skippering a boat in 15+ knots of wind and in gusty conditions
    • Comfortable/physically capable with repeatedly righting a capsized vessel for at least 20 minutes.
    • Well versed in Collision Regulations and/or Racing Rules of Sailing (you've ideally participated in several local races).
    • Willingness to adhere to the approximately 30 minutes of pre/post flight checks required every time before/after sailing the WASZP.
    • Ability to approach the challenge of foiling with a growth mindset.
    • A demonstrated ability to make good judgement calls before launching and while sailing to prioritize safety of the sailor and vessel.
    This lesson series includes:
    • Two 4-hour sessions
    • Day 1
      • Learning the Locarno Buddy System procedures
      • Introduction to the theory behind foiling
      • Introduction to the parts of the Waszp
      • How to rig, launch, and land the Waszp
      • Sailing the Waszp with one wing touching the water
      • Sailing the Waszp in displacement mode with both wings dry
      • Accelerating the boat to achieve first straight line flights
      • Displacement tacking and gybing
    • Day 2
      • Practicing all the skills from Day 1
      • All participants will get a chance to practice launching and landing the Waszp in a buddy system setting.
      • How to switch sailors between a Laser and Waszp during a buddy sail
      • Discuss how a motorized rhib needs to approach a Waszp in order to wing up (in the event of a rescue, the member will have to instruct the driver how to do this).

Successful completion of this lesson will be considered passing the rigging (part 2) and on-water (part 3) checkouts for the Waszp buddy system. Before you will be granted sign-out privileges for the Waszp, you will have to complete a separate orientation clinic (part 1). This is to ensure you get an introduction to the Locarno clubroom, sailing fleet rules, etc. This checkout will be run by a volunteer; all efforts will be made to schedule it immediately following the Day 2 lesson.

Documents outlining Waszp procedures can be found on the Club Locarno website following this pathway: Sail > Sailing Documents and Links
    https://www.clublocarno.com/Sailing-Documents-and-Links

    Registration:

    • Registration closes 48 hours before the first lesson.
    • A minimum of 2 participants is required for a lesson series to run.
    • Members will lose a lesson if they miss it.
    • Members can make up a lesson ONLY IF the instructor agrees, there is another set of lessons of the same type already scheduled, and there is space in the lesson. All of this is to be discussed between the Mac Sailing instructor and the participant.

The class took off in Australia, where 50 years later it is still one of the most popular dinghies. Strong fleets eventually developed in Japan and England, and also in the Pacific Northwest, where good fleets grew in Seattle, Portland and Vancouver.

    About the Boat

The most popular single-handed race boat in the world. With over 210,000 made, the Laser is enjoyed by everyone from club racers to Olympians. The Laser rewards practice and good sailing technique, keeping even the most seasoned racer engaged. Current Lasers are built to the highest specifications with updated foils and sail controls. A three rig system allows the Laser to be enjoyed by sailors of any size and skill.

There are three different sail sizes available on Lasers. The largest one is the Full Rig (also sometimes called Standard Rig) which is 76sq feet. The next size down is the Radial Rig at 62sq ft. The smallest size sail is the 4.7 Rig at ~49sq ft. The different sail sizes roughly correspond to the weight of the sailor, but can also be used to compensate for different wind conditions.

Intro to Racing - Sailing Lessons

Intro to Racing is a great way to learn the basics of racing, and is the course to take if you want to join the Jericho Tuesday evening/Sunday afternoon races, but aren’t comfortable joining by yourself.

We will cover the basics of racing:

    • how to start on a start line, how to round marks on a race course
    • different flags and countdown signals
    • navigating close and around other boats while following the rules
    • race strategy while you are sailing around the committee boat waiting for your race to start
    • Skills: how to adjust your sail shape with your sail controls in order to get more speed out of your sails depending on your angle to the wind and the wind conditions

Bonus - The following will depend on the wind, and the group of participants (and how overwhelmed with new information you already feel!), such as:

    • Bonus tactics: Sailing around the committee boat and start pin to get a point on the horizon to line up with the pin so during the start you know if you've crossed the line or not / Looking at the course to see which side has more wind than the other / Watching other boats already on the course to see what angles they are hitting / Looking at the tankers to see which way the current is going / Timing your approach to the start line
    • Bonus skills: balancing skills like roll tacks and rudderless sailing depending on wind conditions.

We will have three on water sessions: two training sessions and then the last session will be joining the Jericho Race on the Sunday noon. This is a great way to participate in your first Jericho race with a coach present to assist you.

    Prerequisites:

    REQUIRED

    • Being a member at Club Locarno Sailing Fleet.
    • Having completed an equivalent of CANSail 2, Beginner or Refresher Lessons.
    • Having attended (or watched online) the Jericho Rookie Racing Seminar. There will be a quiz!
    • Recommended to maximize benefits of this training: 30 additional hours on water after CanSail 2 or Beginner Lessons, 10 additional hours on water after Refresher lessons.

    Sessions:

    • Wednesday evening:    1800 - 2100 (3 hours).
    • Thursday evening:        1800 - 2100 (3 hours).

Ahoy, sailors! This is a member-run, weekly social sail at the Jericho Tuesdays Regatta – a perfect chance to connect with fellow sailors. We'll aim to have a group leader for each event.

June and July Tuesday evenings promise spirited racing, a course for camaraderie in a tight-knit sailing community that shares the thrill of regatta with sailors of every level. Join us to chase the wind and create memories that'll fill our sails for years!

Participants must register in one of the following categories:

    • Skipper: You will be responsible for skipping the boat.
    • Skipper/Crew: You are comfortable alternating between roles.
    • Crew: You will sail as a crew member during the races.

You will meet at 1700 to assign crews to boats, check them out and rig. Note new time and day because of shortening evenings and wind picking up in the afternoons may change the time over the season, so keep an eye! Aim to launch from the beach at 1800!

We will mainly sail on Vanguards. If there are more participants than Vanguards available, you can race on a Tasar (or an RS500!) if the skipper is checked out.

At the end of each day, we will head up to the Galley with the rest of the Jericho sailors while we wait for Dominique to share the results.

Please register for the event, and cancel if you can't make it so others know if they will have company. Check if others are registered before turning up, unless you're happy to race alone.

NEW MEMBERS ARE WELCOME (provided you have sailing experience)! Check with the member leading the event to see if someone might be able to sign you out as a guest and that you have suitable skills to join the social racing.

GUESTS: You may also bring a guest who has sailing experience to crew for you (remember you are responsible for guests & equipment you sign out).

Weather permitting - we will cancel and retreat to The Galley if winds are beyond 15 knots. Please watch the #sailing channel on Club Locarno Slack for last minute changes.

    About the boat

The Tasar was designed by Frank Bethwaite and Ian Bruce in the early 1970s as a boat for couples. A very light (150 pounds) and sophisticated doublehanded boat (think rotating mast, whisker pole, to begin with). The class took off in Australia, where 50 years later it is still one of the most popular dinghies. Strong fleets eventually developed in Japan and England, and also in the Pacific Northwest, where good fleets grew in Seattle, Portland and Vancouver.
