Level 1 SUP Checkout
This is mandatory for ALL members wishing to use the SUP fleet who have not already completed a Club Locarno SUP checkout.
Please come 10 minutes early ready to go with wet suit/swim gear on!
Checkout starts on time.
Be prepared to have fun and get wet - everyone must complete a mandatory self-rescue :) No prior SUP experience is required for the level 1 checkout.
*Wetsuits suggested for cooler spring weather. *Please bring your Jericho/Club ID.
This free one-hour checkout is all members need to start paddling our SUP boards.
Checkouts primarily cover board care (e.g. boards should never be put down on hard ground, and must never be beached - step off the board well before hitting the beach). You will also need to show you can rescue yourself if you fall in the water (just climb back onto the board).
No prior experience is required for the level 1 checkout. Please find more info on what we will be covered: https://www.clublocarno.com/SUP-Checkout-Level-1
Ahoy, sailors! This is a member-run, weekly social sail at the Jericho Tuesdays Regatta – a perfect chance to connect with fellow sailors. We'll aim to have a group leader for each event.
June and July Tuesday evenings promise spirited racing, a course for camaraderie in a tight-knit sailing community that shares the thrill of regatta with sailors of every level. Join us to chase the wind and create memories that'll fill our sails for years!
Participants must register in one of the following categories:
You will meet at 1700 to assign crews to boats, check them out and rig. Note new time and day because of shortening evenings and wind picking up in the afternoons may change the time over the season, so keep an eye! Aim to launch from the beach at 1800!
We will mainly sail on Vanguards. If there are more participants than Vanguards available, you can race on a Tasar (or an RS500!) if the skipper is checked out.
At the end of each day, we will head up to the Galley with the rest of the Jericho sailors while we wait for Dominique to share the results.
Please register for the event, and cancel if you can't make it so others know if they will have company. Check if others are registered before turning up, unless you're happy to race alone.
NEW MEMBERS ARE WELCOME (provided you have sailing experience)! Check with the member leading the event to see if someone might be able to sign you out as a guest and that you have suitable skills to join the social racing.
GUESTS: You may also bring a guest who has sailing experience to crew for you (remember you are responsible for guests & equipment you sign out).
Weather permitting - we will cancel and retreat to The Galley if winds are beyond 15 knots. Please watch the #sailing channel on Club Locarno Slack for last minute changes.
Club trip to Saysutshun (Newcastle Island) Marine Provincial Park just of Naniamo.
This trip is aimed at kayakers who are beginner campers but others are welcome to join us if there is room. Priority will be given to those who want to gain camping experience and test their skills rolling on & off BC Ferries. We'll take up to ten kayaks (12 people assuming couples in doubles).
This is a joint adventure with SUP fleet. SUP fleet participants can also register on the SUP Trip event.
For kayakers: this is a roll-on roll-off camping trip. We will transport the kayaks to Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal (and gain experience lashing kayaks onto cars). We will roll onto the ferry, roll-off at Discovery Bay, walk the kayaks to the launching site and paddle to Saysutshun.
For SUP: probably need some cars to travel on the ferry to carry the SUPs. But some may be able to walk on carrying camping gear and take the bas/taxi to the Saysutshun ferry,
We have a group campsite for two nights (Friday, Saturday).
For kayakers: the longest day will be up to 20 km of paddling depending on weather conditions and group skills. Depending on numbers, we may split into two groups for day excursions. Day trip destinations will depend on the weather:
This is an explorer trip: paddling will be more aimed at exploring the coastline and islands.
We have the option of eating a supper at the Dinghy Dock Pub on neighbouring Protection Island
Pre-requisite experience: Level 1 skills. Some experience paddling in wind and chop. Ability to paddle at 3-4 km/h for 4-5 hours or 15-20km (with breaks). Competent in self-rescues and assisted rescue.
We will be limited to 12 campers, so if more apply to join we will select names based on experience or at random. There will be a trip planning meeting with all participants the week before the trip and a test paddle as a group from Jericho.
Transportation: we will need cars for transporting kayaks to Horseshoe Bay. We'll book as walk-on passengers (with kayaks) with BC Ferries
Costs: Club Locarno trip fee, ferry, share of camping fee, share of parking fee at Horseshoe Bay.
Any questions about the trip, please contact Mark at kayaking@clublocarno.com
