This weekend course will teach all of the skills required to get on the water and more.  This course is ideal for beginners or lapsed paddlers who need a refresher. Amongst things you will learn are different paddle strokes, how to do a wet exit & self-rescue, day trip planning and local trip options.  It will be delivered by a certified Paddle Canada instructor.

This class also doubles up as your checkout for the Club Locarno Kayak Fleet, so on successful completion of this class you'll be able start paddling.

Lessons will start on the hour - please arrive a bit early.  We will start on land and have an opportunity to change into wetsuits before we launch.

    Course Goal

To be able to move the kayak efficiently and effectively in all directions, and confidently do a paddle-float re-entry and assisted re-entry*, in calm water.

    Suitable for:

    • beginners
    • experienced kayakers who are rusty
    • experienced kayakers who want to learn to be more efficient and avoid injury

There will be a lot of personal feedback, so whatever your level, you will be challenged and learn ways to refine your skills.

    Skills

The goal is to have every stroke effective, efficient, and safe, so that the kayak moves exactly where you want it to go, quickly, with a minimum amount of effort, and without risking injury or long-term strain. We will focus on body mechanics, to always be in a strong, safe position.

Strokes: forward, reverse, forward sweep, reverse sweep, pivot turn, stopping, pulling draw, sculling draw. Depending on the time and interest, we may start looking at rudder strokes.

Safety skills: wet exit, solo (paddle float) and assisted re-entries. If there's time and interest we may try a cowboy scramble or other rescue skills

Other skills: Introduction to edging and bracing

Trip planning: Intro to risk assessment, assessing the current conditions, marine weather, tides and currents, planning a day paddle, potential hazards, local knowledge of English Bay.

    Assessment

Pass: We want to know that you can be safe on the water, so you will need to demonstrate a basic ability to control your kayak with paddle strokes, be able to do a wet exit, and do a paddle float re-entry. In order to get guest privileges, you need to demonstrate an ability to do an assisted rescue.

If you pass, this lesson will also act as your Club Locarno Kayak Fleet Checkout and you will be free to take out the fleet kayaks and bring a guest.

    What to Bring

    Mandatory

Wetsuit or Drysuit: A 3mm 3/4 sleeveless wetsuit (farmer john/jane) is ideal for kayaking, with a jacket and insulation layers on top. I prefer getting it in 2 pieces - neoprene pants and a vest, it's more versatile and comfortable. If you have a full body wetsuit, it's fine for the course, but you may find it uncomfortable and too hot for regular paddling. A shorty is not acceptable - not warm enough for our ocean water temperatures. You can rent wetsuits from Jericho Kayak Centre, Mac Sailing, or Windsure. Please book it with them in advance to make sure that they're open and can accommodate you.

Footwear: For warmth, and protection from cuts, scrapes, and blisters. A 3mm neoprene high top bootie with no zipper is ideal, but any neoprene bootie, water shoe, sport sandal, or old runners will do for the course.

Food: The Galley is too slow for our lunch break, so please bring your own food, including on-water snacks. This is a physical course, so it's important to stay fueled and hydrated

Water: Have a bottle that you can bring on the water with you. There is a filtered water dispenser for filling bottles on site.

    Recommended:

Sunglasses: Highly recommend having a strap, and either floating sunglasses or a floating strap. Polarized is better. The sea gods of English Bay demand occasional tribute of sunglasses, so avoid bringing expensive designer glasses.

Glasses strap: If you wear prescription glasses, a floating strap is a good investment

Sunscreen: There is no shade on the water, and the sun reflects of the surface, so the sun exposure is much higher than on land. Mineral-based (zinc or titanium oxide) sunscreens are more effective and less damaging to sea life.

Dry Warm Clothes: Expect to be cold when we get off the water. You will appreciate having some dry warm clothes (and possibly a towel) waiting for you.

Phone and Case: When you bring your phone on the water, keep it in a waterproof case.

Gloves: For warmth and to prevent blisters. Fingerless gloves are best

Hat: A wide brim, floating hat with a chin strap is ideal.

The best places to get paddling gear are Coast Outdoors in North Vancouver and Western Canoe and Kayak

    Notes:

    • We try to finish on time, but it's not guaranteed, so please don't book anything immediately following the course.
    • It can be a physically challenging course, so take care of yourself, and plan to get sufficient rest, sleep, and nutrition on Saturday night.

Cancellation Policy: There is no refund. Cancellation will only be accepted up to 3 days in advance of the course. Prior to 3 days you can register for a difference course.

Wednesday evening Social Paddle. Watch the #kayak Slack channel for changes to the schedule or cancelation.

      We'll meet at 5:30pm for a 6pm launch.

This is a member run, weekly kayak and a chance to meet other paddlers - perhaps plan future excursions.  We will try to have a group leader for each social event.  The socials will vary depending on the group, from just a nice easy paddle to slightly more strenuous.  The group will stay together for the social.

Launch from the beach at 6pm!  So, aim to meet at 5:30pm to get organized.  Return: at dusk (30min after sunset) at the latest.

Guests & new members:  NEW MEMBERS ARE WELCOME (provided you have kayaking experience)!  Check with the Kayak Director to see if someone might be able to sign you out as a guest and that you have suitable skills to join the social paddle. You may also bring a guest who has kayak paddling experience (remember you are responsible for guests & equipment you sign out).

Please register for the event, and cancel if you can't make it so others know if they will have company.  Please check if others are registered before turning up, unless you're happy to paddle alone.

Weather permitting - we'll probably cancel if its raining or winds higher than 20km/h. Please watch the #kayak channel on Club Locarno Slack for last minute changes.

If you'd like to sponsor a social kayak join the #kayak-social-paddle-leaders slack channel.

                      Advanced Coastal Rowing: Technique

These lessons are for Club Locarno members who wish to improve their technique. Two sessions of two hours each, during which you will learn more about:

      • Drills, skills - and thrills! - of the catch, drive, finish, and recovery, as well as the balance, coordination, and timing required to improve your confidence on the water. Few things are better than rowing in a perfectly-balanced boat, spot-on catches, getting all your power out onto the blades, your boat moving under you, and your mind in rhythmic sync with your body. Your Inner Buddha will thank you.
      • Adapting to rough water. After all, when the going gets rough ... well, the going is going to be rough. Expect to be challenged. 'Nuff said!
      • Having "fun" on the ergometer. Bonus: you will also learn that at Club Locarno, we have a VERY broad definition of "fun".
      • Rowing our Wintech Explorer, either as a Double or Pair. Our doughty Instructor will help you decide which "version" is best suited to your ability and goals. If you've never rowed this boat, come prepared for SPEED!

So, bring yourself and a positive attitude to the Club Locarno Rowing shed, at the East end of the Jericho compound, near the Windsure hut.

Kayaks must be rented in order to use them overnight or for trips that don't originate at the JSCA. Please confirm rental availability by contacting the Kayak Director at kayaking@clublocarno.com or on the Club Locarno slack channel.

A craft can be rented for up to ten days, and rentals are limited to one per member and four boats at any one time.  Double kayaks are available to one member and a guest. You take full responsibility for loss and damage when you rent gear from the club.  More details on rentals can be found here.
Rentals are on a first-come, first served basis according to registration date.  Lessons and other club events have priority over rentals, so please check the calendar for scheduled lessons and checkouts when planning your trip. Boats cannot be reserved ahead of time so you should plan on picking up the boat(s) of choice either at dusk of the evening prior to rental or early on the day of the rental (particularly important if you are relying on a double). Ensure you have appropriate gear to transport the boats safely.  There are some foam blocks and straps in the kayak shed.

Craft signout: When you pickup your rental boat, you must sign out the boat under Rentals on the Craft Signout including the date and estimated time of return. Please do NOT sign out a rental craft until you pick it up.

Kayak Care: please look after the kayaks. Most kayak rentals are for trips which means carrying a loaded kayak. Do not drop loaded kayaks. Make sure you have something under the kayak when beached. You MUST use floating launches and landings. Ensure you have suitable roof gear and know how to do a three-point tie down on the car. Loaded kayaks will crack if they hit rocks.

Once the Kayak Director has confirmed your rental you will be  you will be given a rental code to complete your booking.

We encourage all kayak renters to participate in the BC Marine Trails Coastal Caretakers program for site cleaning and reporting.

      About the Boat

The most popular single-handed race boat in the world. With over 210,000 made, the Laser is enjoyed by everyone from club racers to Olympians. The Laser rewards practice and good sailing technique, keeping even the most seasoned racer engaged. Current Lasers are built to the highest specifications with updated foils and sail controls. A three rig system allows the Laser to be enjoyed by sailors of any size and skill.

There are three different sail sizes available on Lasers. The largest one is the Full Rig (also sometimes called Standard Rig) which is 76sq feet. The next size down is the Radial Rig at 62sq ft. The smallest size sail is the 4.7 Rig at ~49sq ft. The different sail sizes roughly correspond to the weight of the sailor, but can also be used to compensate for different wind conditions.

Intro to Racing - Sailing Lessons

Intro to Racing is a great way to learn the basics of racing, and is the course to take if you want to join the Jericho Tuesday evening/Sunday afternoon races, but aren’t comfortable joining by yourself.

We will cover the basics of racing:

      • how to start on a start line, how to round marks on a race course
      • different flags and countdown signals
      • navigating close and around other boats while following the rules
      • race strategy while you are sailing around the committee boat waiting for your race to start
      • Skills: how to adjust your sail shape with your sail controls in order to get more speed out of your sails depending on your angle to the wind and the wind conditions

Bonus - The following will depend on the wind, and the group of participants (and how overwhelmed with new information you already feel!), such as:

      • Bonus tactics: Sailing around the committee boat and start pin to get a point on the horizon to line up with the pin so during the start you know if you've crossed the line or not / Looking at the course to see which side has more wind than the other / Watching other boats already on the course to see what angles they are hitting / Looking at the tankers to see which way the current is going / Timing your approach to the start line
      • Bonus skills: balancing skills like roll tacks and rudderless sailing depending on wind conditions.

We will have three on water sessions: two training sessions and then the last session will be joining the Jericho Race on the Sunday noon. This is a great way to participate in your first Jericho race with a coach present to assist you.

      Prerequisites:

      REQUIRED

      • Being a member at Club Locarno Sailing Fleet.
      • Having completed an equivalent of CANSail 2, Beginner or Refresher Lessons.
      • Having attended (or watched online) the Jericho Rookie Racing Seminar. There will be a quiz!
      • Recommended to maximize benefits of this training: 30 additional hours on water after CanSail 2 or Beginner Lessons, 10 additional hours on water after Refresher lessons.

      Sessions:

This year Club Locarno will have Community Tables at Farmers Markets around Vancouver.

Mount Pleasant is the last of four, where we will have a table to introduce our club to the public and help them sign up on-site.

As a member run club we always need volunteers for events. This is your chance to represent and have a great time at the farmers market with your fellow Club Locarno members!

      Who should volunteer?

Anyone who is enthusiastic, loves talking to people, and has great things to say about our club. You don't have to be knowledgeable about every fleet! You can just talk about your fleet and direct them to our website or another volunteer.

You can take a shift as short as 2 hours and as long 4 hours. You will be in good company. This is a good opportunity to meet other members.

      What we offer?

A free Club Locarno T-shirt, free coffee/tea/water, croissants and snacks.

      Where to meet?

At our community table inside the Farmers Market.

All new members of the kayak fleet are required to take a kayak lesson, or demonstrate their existing skills in a Kayak Checkout, before they can sign out club boats.

This checkout is for paddlers who can demonstrate basic kayak skills:

      • wet exit
      • a competent solo recovery or self rescue with a paddle float
      • an assisted rescue
Also, we ask members to use a floating launch and landing to reduce wear and tear on the kayaks.  If you don't already have these skills, or haven't been in a kayak for a while and feel a bit rusty, we recommend that you sign up for one of our beginner/refresher lessons instead.

Please register as space is limited, and so we can email you more details.

Checkout sessions take approximately 3hrs and is a great way to meet other new members of the Club Locarno Kayak Fleet.

You must wear a wetsuit or dry suit for the checkout. Wetsuits can be rented at Windsure, also on the JSCA compound.

        About the boat

The Tasar was designed by Frank Bethwaite and Ian Bruce in the early 1970s as a boat for couples. A very light (150 pounds) and sophisticated doublehanded boat (think rotating mast, whisker pole, to begin with). The class took off in Australia, where 50 years later it is still one of the most popular dinghies. Strong fleets eventually developed in Japan and England, and also in the Pacific Northwest, where good fleets grew in Seattle, Portland and Vancouver.

                        Advanced Coastal Rowing: Training

These lessons are for Club Locarno members who wish to improve their technique. Two sessions of two hours each, during which you will learn more about:

        • Incorporating dynamic warmup and stretching into your repertoire. Increasing your range of motion can only be a good thing ... like eating oatmeal for breakfast.
        • Using the ergometer to improve your fitness.  This can only be a good thing as well, but, using the oatmeal analogy, not as "tasty". Sort of like liver for dinner. Still, numbers don't lie, and these sessions will help you improve those pesky erg-scores.
        • Developing on-water training plans for sprints and endurance. "By failing to plan, one is planning to fail": don't let this be you!
        • Training in the Wintech Explorer, Double- or Pair-rigged. This is rowing's version of synchronized swimming ... it's harder than it looks! But oh so much fun when you get the hang of it. The smiles on synchronized swimmers tells you all you need to know.

So, bring yourself and a positive attitude to the Club Locarno Rowing shed, at the East end of the Jericho compound, near the Windsure hut.

We will have three on water sessions: two training sessions and the last session will be joining the Jericho Race on the Sunday noon.

        Sessions:

        • Wednesday evening:    1800-2100 (3 hours).
        • Thursday evening:        1800-2100 (3 hours).

        ReHab : Tasarsailing

        About the event

This clinic includes Part 1 and Part 2 of the checkout, the dry part. It is for experienced sailors who want to be cleared to use a new fleet; it is also a great refresher. For those who are doing their first checkout, it will include an orientation to the sailing fleet and club room.

It will be led by Bob Ennenberg, our TASAR Fleet Captain (and avid Jericho Regatta racer), who will tell you all the secrets and tips to get the most of this double handed racing monohull.

To be allowed to sail the TASAR, you will also need an on-water checkout (Part 3); which will require a separate registration. Details of our checkout clinics can be found at Sailing Orientations and Checkout Clinics.

        Prerequisites

All checkout participants must know how to sail and preferably have experience on or an a similar boat class. We recommend you take a look at the Rigging instructions and the Tasar Manual to have an idea of what to expect beforehand.

        • Health insurance - "residents are strongly advised to purchase additional health insurance from a private insurer before leaving the province, whether they are going to another part of Canada or outside the country - even if they plan to be away for only a day…"
        • Registration is limited based on the number and type of boards that are approved for use on the trip.
        • Registration variations can be made for members who own their own gear, are planning to rent gear on-site (e.g., at Hood River's retail/rental shops), or are not planning to windsurf.
        • Guests can accompany members on trips but cannot use club gear.
